This is one of my favourite finishes for homes. They can really personalise your space, add softness to the room or character to your home. There are different options for what you can use on the windows and doors and there are so many different fabrics that can be used. And with so many new fabrics being released each month your options are endless which sometimes can make the decision harder. Some ideas I have covered below.

Curtains & Tracks – Curtains are the most commonly used window treatment around. But the design of them has changed quite a lot. You have more variety in how you use them. Full length curtains can be used on larger windows not just doors. You have the option of double track so having the sheer or voile on the front track or the back track, this depends on what you want to see from the inside of your room. You can have a patterned sheer on the first track with a simple block-out curtain at the back, this means that when you are in the room you see the nice detail of the fabric. During the day the sheer is also closed so you get the nice detail from the outside. If you don’t want the double track curtains you can still opt for the detail on the sheer and choose a simple plain lining attached to the sheer. Or you can have a thicker fabric that has the details on it and line it with a standard block-out lining to keep the room looking nice and warm. There are a few different pleat options which can change and complement your room. The pleats are Pencil, New York (Single) French (Double), Dutch (Triple), Box or Inverted, Wave, Tailored Wave, Eyelet. With the French pleat you can stitch the pinch at the top or bottom of the pleat and this changes the look. But so many options to choose from. Even the track and rod come in different styles; round, square, flat, ceiling mounted, face fix, recessed. This can all work with whatever style of curtain you want to select.

Roman Blinds – Are an a great option for bedrooms, high windows or when you don’t have a lot of wall space. Roman blinds can be made out of the same fabric as your curtains, so if you have a door that has a curtain on it and a small window for a roman blind you can use the same fabric, so they match. Roman blinds are a fabric option that stacks up and sits above the window, they are only pass the architraves by 40-50mm on the sides but can go lower at the bottom such as 100mm. Because these blinds cover the architraves, they are a great option for bedrooms as it cuts out as much light as possible and also are great for warmth. They also don’t take up a lot of wall space which is ideal for children’s rooms when you want to maximise the space for toys or shelves.

Roller Blinds – These types of blinds are the perfect option when you want that minimal look. They sit within the frame, don’t look bulky when hanging. They can be versatile as well, you can put them within the frame or on the outside of the frame if the reveal isn’t big enough, but also having the roller blind on the outside of the frame you can cover the frame as well to allow less light coming in. Down side to that is you either see the brackets and the ends of the blind or you use a cassette box to cover the blind. Roller blinds are a great cost effective option and you can get sun-filter, light filter and blockout options. The fabric you can use nowadays is really great, they range from your plastic feel (which is great for wet areas) to fabrics that feel soft or textured, to also having patterned fabric. Roller blinds can be motorised which is nice as you don’t have to go around and open each one individually you can just push a button and they can all go up or down and they can pair with your home automation systems.

Venetian Blinds – When I talk about venetian blinds I talk about the wood look horizontal blinds. I really like venetians they give a sense of lux without spending a lot of money. You can get a few different colours but I would say white and black are the most popular, some timbers can look good as well. They don’t work on all windows and you will still get the light gaps down the sides. But you have the option of tilting them differently to give you a different light or a bit of privacy.

HoneyComb Blinds – These types of blinds aren’t used that often but they look so good and have great thermal protection for warmth, they give you different options of opening and closing such as from top to bottom or from bottom to top. They also come in a few different colours and two different sizes. Great for bedrooms because the gaps on the side are minimal and they are good warmth for the room. They can be motorised which is another bonus. They also add a softness to a room that roller or venetian blinds can’t offer.

Shutters – This type of Window Treatment is very lovely, has the luxury look and feel to them. They cover the full window and you can tilt the fins to any angle you desire. You can also have the top quarter to open and close separate to the bottom section. Shutters can work in any area of the home, in bedrooms paired with curtains looks stunning. Shutters also work well in bathrooms they can complete all sorts of tiles. They fit well in to angled windows, and create beautiful features.
